As one can guess, the fact that two-thirds of the original group wasn't involved left the new Black Ivory hamstrung. The name was resurrected by Patterson in the mid-'80s, who partnered with David Hart and Lenny Adams. I've been recommuning with this album tonight and just found this blog where like-minded folks are rhapsodizing about this excellent but unsung group. By the dawn of the '80s, Black Ivory was no more.

The New Jersey duo's sweet combination of classic silky soul, trip-hop, psychedelia, and pop was one of the most groundbreaking. Dawn not only plays like an audio time capsule of slick, tuneful, '90s urban pop, it's a remarkably coherent listening experience.

Those searching lyrics, the weird mish-mash of interests (it's really as much a psychadelic album as it is hip hop, and it's as much a Barry White-style quiet storm album as it is psychadelic, and it's as much an introspective acoustic album as it is Barry White.) and the personal, seemingly free form way of singing, not to mention the great, busy arrangements which benefit from playing loud. This gave the style a not entirely deserved bad reputation, since many 90s artists continued to score big pop hits while developing their own distinctive sounds (PM Dawn, Naughty by Nature, House of Pain, Arrested Development, Coolio, Salt-N-Pepa, Sir Mix-a-Lot, etc.). Dawn's four albums and the Senseless soundtrack The Best of P.M. So tonight the kids and my wife weren't at home for a few hours (a rarity) and I put on "Jesus Wept" at really LOUD volume and it was like all the lights went on again - I realized how crucial this album was to a certain period of my life, and to my ongoing personality, really. I hadn't listened to it in a few years - I've gotten a bit too ipod-shuffly for my own good. "Jesus Wept" - and all PM Dawn's albums, really, but especially that one crucial one - will always be in my Top 10 albums no matter how many hundreds I may continue to get.
